Angama Mara is perched on the rim of Africa’s Great Rift Valley, where endless plains meet a vista so wide it takes your breath away. The lodge’s remarkable setting overlooks what many safari travelers deem the finest game reserve on the continent, Kenya’s Maasai Mara. Angama Mara features fifteen spacious tented suites, which are reminiscent of a classical African safari, each with a view as spectacular as the next.

Every detail has been considered: end-to-end glass frontage, sweeping canvas, and decks overhanging the Mara. The Maasai Mara never fails to deliver extraordinary wildlife sightings: prides of lion, solitary leopards, the shy black rhino, and abundant herds of elephant and buffalo are all to be found here in and amongst bountiful plains game. Experience a truly classic safari in many ways at Angama Mara.

Detailed itinerary

What you'll see and do

This is a customisable trip

Use the following itinerary for inspiration. Remember: all days, hotels and activities can be altered to suit your requirements. A Odyssey Safaris travel specialist will be happy to advise.

Arrival to Nairobi - flight to the Masai Mara

Upon arrival at Nairobi airport you'll be met by our representative for your connecting flight direct to the Maasai Mara.

Upon touchdown at Angama Mara’s private airfield, a warm Swahili welcome awaits you. A five-minute drive to camp to check-in and venture out onto our deck and take in that breath-taking view of the Mara below.

Enjoy a delicious lunch with a chilled Tusker or glass of chardonnay and then it’s time to settle into your tent. While you are enjoying lunch, chat to your camp manager about all Angama has to offer in order to plan your stay to the fullest.

Over the next five days, be sure to include a visit to our Photographic Studio for any assistance you might need with your camera. Meet your guide who will be waiting at your private safari vehicle and begin your exploration of the Mara Triangle and the magnificent creatures that call it home. Return to the lodge in time to toast the sunset over the Great Rift Valley, with your drink of choice in hand. The perfect moment to recount your day.

After dinner, tuck into bed. Close the mesh sliding doors but leave the glass sliding doors open – the African night chorus is not to be missed.

Don’t forget to leave to the blinds up to watch the stars falling at your feet!

Game drives from Angama Mara

A gentle early morning wake up to a cappuccino and freshly baked Maasai honey biscuits placed discreetly by your butler in the lobby of your tent, prepare to head out for a full day in the Mara. Descending down Angama Mara’s private road, you will arrive at the heart of the action as the sun breaks the horizon, surrounded by more animals than you could imagine. The vast grasslands dotted with lone desert date trees are home to abundant herds as well as Africa’s Big Five – lion, leopard, elephant, black rhino, and buffalo. Enjoy a picnic breakfast somewhere in the middle of nowhere, and slowly make your way to the Tanzanian border where the Mara meets the Serengeti without a soul sight. This secret corner of the Mara Triangle is all yours. Then, of course, it is time for Picnic #2 - what could be better than lunch under a lone tree with only elephants as company? After an exciting day out, come back to the sundowner boma, sip on a gin and tonic while enjoying a sunset Maasai warrior performance. Join in on this time-honored celebration of song and dance.

Walking safari

This morning, enjoy a lie-in while watching the hot air balloons gently float past at eye-level from our 300-meter high vantage point up on the escarpment. If you feel like stretching your legs, join one of our Maasai naturalist guides and discover the Great Rift Valley on foot. This is your opportunity to learn more about Maasai culture as you wander through birdsong-filled forests and wide-open landscapes. Breakfast is served back at the lodge - be sure to ask about the Chef’s Special. Then take a stroll back to your tent for a pampering massage on your private deck. Wander through our Shamba (kitchen garden) picking and tasting as you go. Afterward, enjoy a private harvest-to-fork lunch under the shady moth trees. The leaves and vegetables which you have foraged are washed and readied for the freshest salads imaginable, paired with crusty bread, local cheeses, and chilled rosé wine. Spend the afternoon relaxing in the Shamba, or take a slow afternoon safari. And the perfect end to this relaxing day? A nightcap by the campfire, under a million stars.

Sunrise balloon flight over the Mara

A very early morning wake-up call followed by a very early departure for a sunrise hot air balloon flight over the Mara plains. This is one of the iconic experiences of Africa, floating effortlessly above herds, indigenous forests, and the winding Mara River. After landing, toast the morning’s adventure with bubbles and a delicious bush breakfast in the heart of the Reserve – well worth the early morning start. Enjoy a slow safari back to camp in time for lunch. Stop by the Photographic Studio, a space of creativity and storytelling, an exciting hub of imagery, content creation, teaching, and sharing. Remember to give yourself enough time to print your favorite images to take home with you. For the energetic, work up a sweat in the lodge’s Fitness Rooms – floor-to-ceiling glass stacking doors means there is nothing between you and the Mara. Tonight, experience Angama Mara’s lantern-lit signature Bush BBQ tucked away under the forest canopy.

Relaxing in the Masai Mara

Today the pace is a little slower as you head off on a lazy game drive or relax and enjoy the view from your red rocking chair and one of the books from our Africana Library, followed by breakfast on the deck. Lunch is a romantic affair: re-create that magical picnic scene from the classic movie, Out of Africa, on the very site it was filmed. Checked blankets, comfy cushions, canvas safari chairs, sparkling wine on ice – everything you need for an intimate picnic for two. What about a massage with a view today? Angama’s masseuses will set up on your deck and you can choose either a 60 or 90 minute full body massage. Later, meet our Maasai Mamas in the Beading Studio and try your hand at at this ancient craft? Perhaps have the Maasai ladies create a bespoke piece for you to take home. Dinner tonight could be in the privacy of your tent? And don’t forget to watch the Southern Cross travel across the heavens up above.

What people are saying about Odyssey Safaris

Booked a last minute Safari to Kenya, to take advantage of terrific airfares from the States and to get ahead of the crowds, once people rush back to Africa to see the amazing wildlife, geography, and kind people. Odyssey navigated every detail - took the time to interview me and match what they learned to the type of accommodations and safari experience I was looking for. On a scale of 1-10, in multiple factors, they scored 10 each time - it was a flawless (and relaxing) trip.

What can I say! I definitely am blown away by Odyssey Safari. Before even arriving to Kenya Lucy was prompt in emailing us back and forth regarding the safari and what we would need for our visit. Everything was wonderful from the moment we were picked up from the airport by our tour guide Jackson who was on time at the airport and was waiting with a sign with our names on it. Jackson was great as our safari driver! We were able to see all big five animals up close and person. Jackson made sure that we had an incredible visit on our safari from the game rides to make sure we were comfortable in the lodges we stayed at. I will definitely be back again and will be requesting Jackson as my tour guide.

I would also highly recommend Odyssey Safaris for anyone looking to go to Africa. The hotels were clean, and considering that they had been closed for a year, they were in good order. The food was good and every member of the staff I encountered at each hotel, were kind and helpful. I will direct others who wish to go on a safari to your company. I have a few friends who are now looking to arrange a safari! Thank you for your exemplary organization of our safari and for having an amazing guide on staff.

We just returned how from one of the most incredible journeys I have every experienced, and I have explored hundreds of cities around the globe. An African Safari has always been a lot the top of my “must do” list, but timing and the expense have always held me back.

My takeaways for those considering the trip: 1) Odyssey Safaris was a pleasure to work with, and we will book more trips through them 2) Take advantage of the upgrades and excursions — they only add to the experience and your ability to relax and truly envelop yourself, and 3) Have an open mind — Hakuna Matatta.
